STRATEGY 4:

SUCCESS IN SCHOOL

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:

Low achievement in reading has important long-term consequences in terms of individual earning potential, global competitiveness and general productivity.

GOAL:

All children and their families have access to and utilize resources, ensuring each child and family is connected to resources in a timely manner.

BREAKING DOWN THE ISSUE

Vision and Hearing Screenings

A child’s ability to see and hear affects their performance in the classroom. Approximately ten years ago, the Troup County School System stopped vision and hearing screenings for students. In 2018, the Lions Club and local volunteers gave vision and hearing screenings to all second graders in Troup County. The result was that 8% of second graders failed either their vision or hearing test, making it extremely difficult for them to read on grade level.

ACTION PLAN

  • Match families with mentors for attendance.

  • Promote Read Learn Grow tutoring initiative.

  • Facilitate vision and hearing screenings.
